What to do if a person lying on the ground is unconscious?
If the sufferer does not react, he or she is unconscious:
- call for assistance;
- make sure that the place in which the person is lying is safe for both, them and you;
- turn the injured person on their back on a hard base, and then clear the respiratory tract by gently tilting the head to the back and raising the lower jaw;
- check whether the injured person is breathing. For this purpose, check movements of the chest and try to check the exhaled air on your cheek.
When assessing the breath of the injured person, try to measure the pulse on the common carotid artery.
Checking the breath
A. If the breath is correct:
- lay the injured person in a safe position;
- ask someone to call assistance, or do it yourself (ambulance no.112);
- regularly check the breath;
B. In case of breathing problems:
- ask someone to call assistance, or do it yourself (no. 112);
- perform the sequence of 30 chest compressions or 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths. Chest compressions are performed by placing one hand on the other on the chest of the sufferer, in the middle of the breastbone; the depth of compressions should be 4-5 cm.
Remember!
- you can stop resuscitation only in order to assess the condition of the injured person when they start breathing. In any other case, it is necessary to continue resuscitation;
- if there are more people on the site, rescuers should change every 1-2 min so that to avoid exhaustion;
- rescue breaths are not mandatory! In such case perform chest compressions continuously - 100/min.
- when you suspect a spine injury, it is forbidden to move the person's head and carry the injured person. In exceptional circumstances of a direct hazard to life of the injured person or the rescuer, the injured person should be moved to a safe place; this is done by holding the injured person by their ankles. When we are dealing with a motorcyclist, if possible, we should not remove the helmet during the CPR (the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
