When may the police check your ID and how is it done?

The purpose of this activity (verification) is determination of one's identity. The police officer determines identity of the controlled person on the basis of an ID card, a passport or other valid and reliable document with a photo and a number or a series. Identity can be also determined on the basis of a statement of another person (e.g. accompanying friend), whose identity has already been determined on the basis of the mentioned documents. There is no obligation of carrying ID, however, this helps to avoid detention and interview at the police station in order to determine one's identity. Refusal to present documents or providing false data is a misconduct and shall be subject to a fine.
