AT HOMO FABER

The end of this year seems to be a moment when more than just one thing finishes. Last Saturday the Association moved out of Krakowskie Przedmieście 39. We are still looking for a new place for our office, so at the moment there is no permanent location; however, Homo Faber continues to be as busy as ever. Unfortunately, the Welcome to Lublin project has drawn to a close; more about it on the Hello website and Facebook. Thank you for being with us for the past two years; we hope the experience has been as rewarding for you as it has been for us.

GENERAL

Christmas is coming, one of the most important holidays in the Polish calendar. Unlike in many other countries where Christmas is widely celebrated, the most important day of Christmas for Poles is actually Christmas Eve (which, paradoxically, is not even an official holiday), when families gather around a splendid dinner (traditionally the only meat served is fish), share wafer (known as opłatek) and best wishes, sing carols and give each other presents. There is also a tradition of Midnight Mass, known as Pasterka.

Transport: on Christmas Eve, the city transport operates according to the "Wigilia i Sylwester"  (Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve) timetable. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day it's the "Wielkanoc, Boże Narodzenie, Nowy Rok" (Easter, Christmas and New Year) timetable.
Shops: most shops will be open on Christmas Eve, but they will close early, so best not leave your shopping to the last minute. On Christmas Day the city pretty much comes to a standstill, so don't expect to be able to shop or go out much in the evening. It might be easier to get a loaf of bread on Boxing Day, but best not count on it.
