AT HOMO FABER

ST ANDREW'S NIGHT PARTY

25th November, 7 p.m.
Homo Faber, ul. Krakowskie Przedmieście 39
We'd like to invite you to a party we'll be having at Homo Faber on 25th November, start 7 p.m.

It's an old Polish tradition to celebrate St Andrew's Night (known as Andrzejki) on the night of 29/30th November. The celebrations are invariably accompanied by fortune telling games (e.g. dripping molten candlewax into a bowl of water and reading one's future from the shadow the resulting wax shape throws on the wall when held against light).

We are throwing our party a bit earlier so that on the actual St Andrew's Night you can participate in whatever the city's numerous clubs have to offer.

There will be lots of good music to dance to (you can bring your own music too; also, if you'd like to share with the others any of your countries' traditional dances you're very welcome to do so), snacks (if you feel like preparing something, feel free), fortune telling and generally lots of fun and games.

If you have any questions, please contact me at hs@hf.org.pl

Oldboy
(South Korea/2003)
dir. Chan-Wook Park
The protagonist is kidnapped and locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing his captor's motives. When he is finally and unexpectedly released, he finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracy and violence.

The film won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and high praise from the President of the Jury, director Quentin Tarantino. Film critic Roger Ebert has claimed Oldboy to be a "...powerful film not because of what it depicts, but because of the depths of the human heart which it strips bare". In 2008, voters on CNN named it one of the ten best Asian films ever made.

ART EXHIBITION

ICONS by Małgorzata Pomian
until 9th December
Galeria Biała, ul. Narutowicza 32 (see map) [entry through Centrum Kultury]

Małgorzata Pomian was born in 1985 and has graduated from the UMCS Art Department.

In her own words: "According to research cited by Jake Halpem in his book Fame Junkies, the majority of teenage girls in the USA would rather be famous than intelligent. Half of those questioned think that being an assistant to a celebrity is a more prestigious position than that of a university professor. The mass media inundate us with advice on how to live, what to wear, what to eat and when to have a poo. Our self-preservation instinct is vanquished through this daily brainwash. In a quest for acceptance, an individual is able to entangle him/herself into a neverending chase after a jumper, handbag or pair of shoes . . .
As a child of my epoch, I show what I feed on, which is images of contemporary saints, blessed, gods and their muses, that is newspaper and internet human forms. The people I paint live in a totally different reality, that of an artificially created world. Those interested in it can actually forget about reality, which loses its attractiveness in confrontation with the glitter, opulence and guffaw emanating from the media. Similarly, when praying, people experience a state of temporary absence. This is why I will risk a comparison between those media personas and saints that used to be worshipped in the past. The contemporary gods wear brands that we should have in order to be as beautiful and happy as they are.

When working, I make a synthesis of selected photographs. The characters are taken out of their context and placed on a flat icon-like background."
