Programme:

The Mystery of Flying Kicks
Dir. Matthew Bate / Australia / 2009 / 14'
Murder, sex, drugs, art, politics... Trainers hanging down from telephone wires have become a powerful urban symbol, inspiring a variety of theories both absurd and sinister. The authors asked people from all over the world to help them get at the truth. The documentary was made solely on the basis of the photographs, videos, animations and other testimonies sent by those people. The Mystery of Flying Kicks is the result of a unique instance of digital cooperation between the filmmakers and the international public.
Matthew Bate is an Australian documentalist, the author of What Future Sounded Like, a film exploring the genesis of electronic music, and Mayor, the Artist, the Farmer and His Wife, the first collaboration between the Australian SBS and Al Jazeera. At present, he's working at a documentary about the legendary N.Y. photographer Martha Cooper.

Pa Pa Power
Dir. Noaz Deshe / USA / 2009 / 12'
A short video for the song "Pa Pa Power" by Dead Man's Bones lead by the actor Ryan Gosling. A fifties-style knees-up, children running through a field at night, a feeling of nostalgia for lost innocence, and a proof of the uniting power of music - all beautifully shot. Noaz Deshe is an artist with LA and Berlin connections, author of music videos for, among others, Gogol Bordello and Juliette & the Licks. He's also the co-writer of the Ryan Gosling film about Ugandan child-soldiers (in production), as well as currently preparing the production of his own feature film based on Sam Shepard's play.

Mary Last Seen
Dir. Sean Durkin / USA / 2010 / 15'
She thinks it's just a trip. If only she knew where he's taking her... A young woman sets off with her boyfriend on a journey to a place that, according to his promises, is going to be beautiful and peaceful. During the journey, however, a series of disturbing events take place and it slowly becomes clear that both their relationship and the purpose of this journey are not what they appeared to be. The film had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2010.
Sean Durkin has graduated from the New York Tisch School of Arts and is a co-founder of the independent film production company Borderline Films.

Klaxons - Twin Flames
Dir. Saam Farahmand /UK/ 2010 / 3'20''
A video for the single "Twin Flames" by Klaxons. The band members take part in a bizarre orgy where, thanks to the use of CG, the participants' bodies merge.
Saam Farahmand directs films connected with the world of art, music, fashion, TV, performance art, the Internet, documentaries and advertising. His work includes videos for Hercules & Love Affair, Simian Mobile Disco, Soulwax and The xx. "Twin Flames" is his seventh collaboration with Klaxons.

Flying Lotus - Kill Your Co-Workers
Dir. Beeple / USA / 2010 / 3'
This is what happens when robots are allowed to have their own parade... A blissfully violent video for a song by Flying Lotus. The film is an open source production, which means that it can be legally downloaded and altered. The author, Beeple, says it's possible to see exactly how he created each scene and character, and that anyone can manipulate the elements at will. Beeple is a nickname of Mike Winkelman from Neenah, Wisconsin. His work includes short films, visualisations, graphics, music and drawings, and has been presented at various festivals including Onedotzero, Ann Arbor, Chicago Underground and Optronica. He's the founder of the multimedia collective Donebestdone.

Goodbye Mr Chu
Dir. Stephanie Lansaque and Francois Leroy / France / 2005 / 15'
Hai, a boy living with his mum and grandparents, catches a bird. Duong Le, a rickshaw-driver and friend of the family, takes a carp through the Mekong rice paddies and the streets of Saigon on orders from a mysterious Mr Chu. All over Vietnam, preparations for Trung Guyen - the Feast of Wandering Hearts - are under way. To commemorate those who have passed away, some people make offerings of flowers and rice, and burn incense, while others set animals free. Goodbye Mr Chu is the first film made together by Stephanie Lansaque and Francois Leroy, the authors of the animation Mei Ling, already familiar to the Future Shorts audiences.

The Drift
Dir. Kelly Sears / USA / 2007 / 8'
Composed entirely from photographs found at flea markets and in second-hand bookshops, it's a story about psychedelic rock, scientific research, high hopes, frustrated dreams and levitating bodies... See how a botched space mission in the sixties caused the counter-culture revolution.
The American director and animator Kelly Sears has presented her works in, among others, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Hammer Museum and at the Sundance Festival, as well as at numerous galleries and festivals all over the world. Her animated collages are created from images found in old books, magazines and encyclopedias. Those pictures - a pictorial history of the US visual culture - are used as a tool of critical reflection about the ideological foundations of the present.
